Profile: Fabien H. Dumay

Personal background
I am living in the netherlands, 39 years old and working as an AS/400 systems administrator/programmer. I live together with my girlfriend and our two cats. my main interests are currently JAVA programming; i am doing some small programming jobs for one of my friends, and trying to setup the website of my small company.

I am interested in almost anything that has to do with science end exploration (discovery channel and National Geographic are two stations i like to watch). Marine animal life and ancient egypt (history, art and writng) are the things i am most interested in.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am interested in astronomy and science in general; in school i once did a project over the live of stars (not the ones in hollywood though ;-)) and i was then confronted by the question about intelligent extra-terrestial live. Allthough i was and still am convinced that other intelligent life forms do exist out there, i think the chances of meeting them are slim at best.

Not only do we have to consider the enormous distance in space (if we are more or less limited by the light speed limit, they probably have the same problem), I am not 100% that they all have friendly intentions. Problem is that we can not determine what is hostile or not (we can not use our human rules to take their measure), and if we remind us of the story by H.G.Wells (war of the worlds), where the martians are killed by our bacteria, it might be the otherway round as well, then again, our biological structure might be so incompatible, that there would be no such risk.

Nevertheless i think that the seti project is very important. If there is life out there, we should at least know about it, even it only proves that the arrogance of some people on our own planet is unjustified in that respect. I think that there is no danger from sending out a signal that there is something alive on our little piece of rock. If they can detect our signal, maybe we can communicate with eachother (how ? i havn't got a clue....)
