Personal background
A friend of mine told me about SETI a few years ago, but I never got around to setting it up (too processor intensive for my gaming machines....can't make the sacrifice ;) but being a full time college student, and having all but given gaming up, I found myself 3 6 computers, 3 of which are 2GHz or higher sitting idle all day long. I installed the client and started crunching away.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I find it hard to beleive that extraterrestrial life does not exist. Who knows when we'll discover it. Perhaps we've already been discovered, but are being hidden or kept out of the loop until we are ready.

To that end, I'm not sure we need to transmit a beacon. Besides, whether we like it or not, it's been done. (Remember the pretense behind Contact).

As far as why I run SETI, I'd rather have my clock cycles utilized for something useful than just the system idle process.
