Profile: Mary Sharkey

Personal background
I've lived in Toronto for almost 20 years now; I'm 42. My family roots extend from Ireland and Finland. I'm a Certified Kinesiologist and Certified Exercise Physiologist with a Specialized Honours Kinesiology degree. My experience includes (but is not limited to) injury rehabilitation, personal training, fitness conditioning, fitness and lifestyle appraisals, testing and counselling, and high-performance/work-related fitness appraisals (NHL hockey players [and rookies and draft picks], Ontario firefighter applicants, Ontario Hydro workers, etc...). I've always been fascinated with the possibility of the human race not being alone in the Universe...wouldn't it be such a waste of space?

Hobbies include keeping up with research in my field of work and attending continuing education courses in keeping with and extending beyond professional credential requirements, playing guitar, keeping physically and mentally fit, reading, baking and cooking as time permits, and travelling when possible (outside of work, that is).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I thank one of my three brothers for currently running SETI@home. Michael is an incredible computer programmer who really supports LINUX; his current interest is in personal aircraft and he's also a pilot. He introduced me to SETI@home years ago and set me up with a screensaver in that regard at the time. Now, many years and computers later and having recently seen the movie 'Contact' again, my interest in, and feeling of being personally obligated to assist, SETI has been renewed.

SETI@home is amazing and what an efficient use of our collective computer down-time. It's an honour to participate.
