Personal background
I am a project manager for EDS (Electronic Data Systems) working on the Navy's new NMCI project. 34 years of age and living in Dallas, Texas. However, my job keeps me on the road quite a bit, so on any given day, you could find me in Washington, DC, Detroit (A lot of Navy in Detroit isn't there?) or San Diego...or any other place where the United States Navy ports....
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Thoughts on SETI@Home:

The concept of distributed computing fascinates me. The raw power of the unused cycles is staggering. If you go back to the history of my company (EDS), Ross Perot thought about the fact that the big mainframes used to crunch big military formulas were just left humming along in the dark after hours. He thought (In his little voice), "Hey, I will bet that someone will BUY the use of those cycles..." and the rest, as they say, is history.

The same innovative concept applies here. We are just not using the big mainframes of olden times. However, the laptop I am typing this on is probably more powerful than those mainframes!

I need to figure out a use for this....the "killer app", as it were.... Anyone with any thoughts, please let me know....

Thoughts on SETI:

Ever since I was a little boy, growing up camping in the Alabama mountains, I have looked to the sky and KNOWN that we cannot be alone.

If you take Hawking's thoughts that sheer probability ensures that there are numerous species out there, then the search for our neighbors is almost a moral imperative. I only hope I live long enough to witness our fist contact. Of course, when dealing with things on a universe scale, my brief existence is but a mere blip on the cosmic radar screen.

How pompous is it to think that WE (humans) are the only intelligent life out there in the universe of trillions of systems?

My SETI@Home Systems:

1 - 1.3 GHz WIN2K machine
1 - PII 600MHz WIN2K machine
1 - PIII 700 MHz WIN2K Laptop (Work - Ross would be proud)
1 - PII 266MHz WIN2K machine
Coming soon - PIII 700MHz Linux machine

Do the math....and keep looking!
