Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that the existence of extraterrestrial life is a mathematical certainty; after all there are some half a trillion stars in the Milky and some 50 billion galaxies like it that we know of. Some of those stars must have planets orbiting them that are capable of supporting life, life as we know it. Who knows what other possibilites there are. Even in our own solar system Europa may be capable of sustaining life.

The more pointed question would be is there intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.

SETI@home is a great example of distributed computing. I am running it one 700 Mhz PIII laptop and my new P4 2.53 Ghz machine.
