Personal background
There is no doubt that we are not alone, there must be life outside of earth, but how intellegent it is, is really the million dollor question. But it is worth looking for. (just maybe we will find something wonderful and totally unexpected on the way) Sometimes thats the best way to discovery. Cheers!

"Every living thing is, from the cosmic perspective, incredibly lucky simply to be alive. Most, 90 percent and... more, of all the organisms that have ever lived have died without viable offspring, but not a single one of your ancestors, going back to the dawn of life on Earth, suffered that normal misfortune. You spring from an unbroken line of winners going back millions of generations, and those winners were, in every generation, the luckiest of the lucky, one out of a thousand or even a million. So however unlucky you may be on some occasion today, your presence on the planet testifies to the role luck has played in your past."
— Daniel C. Dennett

"How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people -- first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving... "

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
They are out there, or have been, or will be. Time goes on, and someday, the earth will be a million years older then it is now, having gone through so many changes. The sun may look different, the moon will have drifted and become a smaller influence on earth. Just as so many eons have passed, so will they pass again. So what stages life around the universe is in, is only speculation. But as long as man has looked skyward, up into that bowl of stars, he has wondered what secrets lie within. And as much as i hope we find it in my lifetime, i know that contributing toward a common goal with like minded people, can itself be a way to discovery.
