Profile: Alan P. Burke

Personal background
I am a software engineering consultant and developer. I have a B.Sc. degree from Canada's Royal Military College (1966), and postgraduate studies in systems engineering. I've been creating mission-critical software for over 35 years; I've 'been there, done that'.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Since my teens I've frequently looked up at the nighttime sky and been awed by the beauty and enigma of our universe. On a moonless night on the shores of a lake in Algonquin Park while I was on a fishing trip, I turned my binoculars toward the constellation of Cygnus, the swan, and the mist of the Milky Way. Seeing thousands of stars through the lenses, I couldn't help but feel a tremendous sense of how much we are just one small place in the vastness of space.

I remember seeing the early satellites (Sputnik, Echo and others) in orbit around our planet and felt excitement at the prospect that we might finally be stepping beyond the confines of Earth. I became an avid reader of science fiction, during the golden years of the 60's and 70's, further fuelling my imagination.

It's delightful to see the international flavour of the SETI@Home membership and to know that millions of others share the dream of discovering intelligence out there. Proof of existence of other stellar races would have a profound impact on our world and help us through our worst times, when we appear to be destroying ourselves and our planet.
