Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) because someone is outta there.

2) I don't think there are *many* advanced civilizations out there, and I personally think the chances of radio SETI to work to be very slim, at least with current technology. But we must try anyhow, since we don't really know, and even zero results can teach us something.

3) More frequencies, subtler algorithms, and luck. :)
