Personal background
I'm 62 and from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, one of the nicest cities of the world.
I'm an already retired nuclear physicist and have hamradio as my hobby. I'm a ham since 1958; in those times, the rainbow was still black&white!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Well, with the size of our universe, it is really possible to exist many planets with life conditions (life here means 'life as we conceive it'). But those conditions are the result of the conjunction of many physical factors, as water, atmosphere, its pressure, temperature, etc and because of that, even with trillions and trillions of existing planets, the density of suitable such planets in the universe is very low, that is, the expected average distance between two valid planets is very big. Thus, life must be a reality in many worlds, but the closest to earth among them is expected to be very far!
Then, no danger for the discovery of extraterrestrial life. As any cientifi discovery, the benefits are great, but must be smartly used.
About the human transmission of beacons, we have limited power availability and there are infinite possible directions! I think it must be done AFTER some initial indication of existing life in some direction.
SETI@home is a very nice system, very smartly developed by using the international community to help the program. I'm here to help, doing my best.
I think it is necessary to increase the international propaganda on it because the most computer using people I talk to don't know about SETI@home, at least here, in Brazil.
Here I present an ecological comment: it seems to be true that no life exists in our solar system, but at the Earth; the closest sun is the Alfa Centaurus, 4 light years from us. Supposing that it exists a valid planet there, we can garantee that, within a sphere of a 4 light years radius, centered in the Earth, there is no other Amazon forest, Mississipi river, Atlantic Ocean, etc and THIS is a strong reason for us to preserve them!
