Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I've always had a fascination with what's "out there". So as soon as I learned of the SETI@home project I immediately became a participant (05/15/99).

I think it's important for everybody to have an active role in the community they live in. Well, Earth is certainly a community among the stars! Many of the technological advances that are now common place have resulted because of space exploration. Think of what we could learn if we ever do discover other civilizations!

The possibility of SETI@home finding something "out there" may be slim. But that possibility does exist. The authors and supporters of SETI@home have a vision and that vision will evolve. Technologically we have advanced more in this century than in the entire history of man! Just think of what's yet to come!

Is there intelligent life out there? Nobody knows yet, but I think there is. How advanced is the life form? would be more of an interesting question. We are on the verge of discovering extraterrestrial organisms right here in our own solar system. The ice covered oceans of Europa (one of Jupiter's moons) may possibly enlighten us as to how harsh an environment living cells can live. We are astounded everyday at what is being discovered in the once thought inhospitable, deepest and darkest oceans here on Earth.

As with any new discovery there will be risks involved; will our race be immune to foreign substances outside of our own Earth, or will our interstellar vehicles be safe enough for such journeys? We have proved through-out history that with continued research and economic support we are able to overcome any challenge.

Should we transmit our signals for others to find? Of course! After all, if there were other advanced civilizations capable of transmitting signals and they chose not to, we would most likely never know of their existence. It would only be logical for two worlds to work together toward the common goal - is there life out there?
