Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Given the size, age and complexity of the Universe it seems impossible that life or one kind or another hasn't evolved elsewhere. However, I'm not convinced that it would bear any similarity to life on our own planet, or that it would develop technology similar to ours, making electromagnetic radiation a possible basis for communication.

Consider this: Science and Technology are the products of Human intelligence and Psychology. These things are themselves the products of our evolution, determined by specific circumstances within our environment. Since we generally agree that extraterrestrial life would not be physically similar to us, we also have to admit that their technology, based as it would be on their unique perception of the Universe, might not be similar to ours. Without the sense of sight, for example, who can say the humans would have developed technology based on electromagnetism?

That said, I am convinced that SETI fulfils an important role, if only to disprove its hypothesis. I think it's also valuable for us Humans to appreciate our own insignificance by forcing us to contemplate the Universe around us.
