Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home in the hopes of discovering the first confirmed extraterrestrial
signal transmitted by an advanced civilization. The Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence is one of mankind's most significant scientific endeavours of our time. It provides our society with the possibility of returning one of the greatest scientific discoveries in exchange for very little investment. It also provides opportunities for other scientific research related to signal detection, such as discovering new astrophysical phenomenon, the development of new detection algorithms, and numerous educational opportunities for young scientists. The project has also sparked renewed public interest in the field of Astrobiology and SETI whose goal to explain the origin of our species. SETI@home has lead the way in spawning other distributed computing science projects, such as the upcoming "Astropulse" project which will search for signals due to evaporating primordial black holes, the Einstein@home project which is currently searching for gravitational waves from compact stellar objects, and other numerous projects related to medical and applied research that could greatly benefit our society with very minimal funding put forth.
