Profile: Jerry Flattum

Personal background
I\\'m a songwriter, screenwriter and freelance writer. Currently working on a large recording project primarily in the digital domain. Will launch website, JerryFlattum.com, in the fall of 2006 featuring original songs and other works.

Worked as a musician for many years and sold one screenplay. I have several published freelance works and, related to Seti, I\\'ve written on Cosmology at Future of Human Evolution website: http://www.human-evolution.org/cosmology.php

Ironically, I\\'ve always joked that this is not my planet. So the alien I\\'m looking for just might be me.

I currently live in Palm Harbor, Florida, but have lived in Minnesota, New York, Arizona and Nevada.

I've written a song called, "Don't Forget About A Billion Stars." Although it's more romantic based than scientific, I'm hoping the song serves as a reminder to look up at the stars whenever there is a loss of hope or answers seem illusive.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
If I had a second life, it would be as an astronomer or astronaut. Outside of the science and art of music and film, I\\'ve never been into science. So, any involvement with SETI helps make up for poor grades in science class.

I am an absolute supporter of just about any kind of scientific endeavor. When I started writing for The Future of Human Evolution website (http://www.human-evolution.org/index.php), I was able to engage science in a way I never did in my youth. I also write on nanotechnology and recently created a series for the site called, \\"Visualizing the Future of Human Evolution.\\" It\\'s an exploration into all things visual.

Why we have not been openly visited by extra-terrestrials remains a mystery. I think it is terribly self-centered to think we are the only living creatures in this universe. X-tra terrestrials might not be as advanced as we suspect, which might explain, in part, why we haven\\'t made contact. It could also be because of the violence on Planet Earth as a deterrent. And then, our days may be numbered.

I really have little understanding of just exactly how downloading the SETI software on my computer helps scientists make contact. I\\'m sure I\\'ll learn as I go here. I\\'m only beginning to learn about such things as particle accelerators, supercomputers, and the various theories about the universe.

I am selfish enough to wish that if contact is made, it is done through my computer. In other words, I\\'m hoping for a sign...hell, maybe even an email, ha! But that\\'s wishful thinking. I\\'m sure my contribution is really just a part of some monumental mathematical calculation beyond my scope of understanding. But if it helps...
