Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Why did I join the SETI@home program?
I found a reference to the project in some science magazine, a while before it
started the beta-testing phase, and immediately became interested in participating
in one of the IMHO most important searches of our time. Being a part of the SETI,
however small part, makes me feel like I'm contributing something valuable to humanity,
and trying to keep the search for ET alive.
Should SETI transmit data to ET?
I think that it would be a good idea to transmit radio-signals to potential ET's,
to give alien SETI-like projects a chance to detect Earth, and if there is more
advanced civilizations in the "neighborhood" they will have a better chance of
detecting our signals than we do theirs, thus it would be beneficial to our own SETI
search as well. I do not think we should be concerned about hostile aliens, as
the vastness of space, makes interstellar agression impractical (at best), though great
entertainment in arcade games and Hollywood movies :-)
Ideas for future SETI@home projects
1. Bring in more telescopes, preferable a mix from northern and southern hemisphere
2. Get a spaceborne telescope on-line, which could filter out Earthly RFI and get a higher sensitivity
3. Expand the search to a broader bandwidth and include optical search.
