Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have run it in the past (about 4 years ago).
A long and arduous route. How will it work with the antisipated NASA/ESA missions (TPF/Darwin link-up)?
Everybody seems to assume that a civilisation slightly in advance of our own, would be able to understand the binary code that we are putting out. They may not even communicate on a level that we can understand. We could be ships in the night. Of course I am probably not considered qualified to argue these points, and I could be wrong. I just find it hard to believe that communication on a level that we can understand without some sort of 'universal translator' is possible. But we also have to locate a suitable Earth-type planet with an intelligent lifeform that has ventured beyond its homeworld and discovered a safe form of star travel. Having said all that, I wish the Seti organisation good luck in its endeavours. At least you are trying to communicate. I'm not sure what we here in the UK are doing in that direction at the moment. Robotic explorers, I think.
