Personal background
Hi there!
I´m 17 and I live in Germany.
I love 1960s music, cats, art, chocolate, play the guitar, yoga & eastern spirituality, Herman Hesse books, vegetarian food and camping out in nature.
And I´m also interested in science, space and science-fiction and I often wonder whether we are alone in space. And, of course, I´m a big fan of SETI. Most people I know think it´s a waste of time and energy.
They tell me that there are more important things to deal with...wars, poverty, environmental issues, climate change, everyday life...etc. And that walking around with my head up in the skies won´t buy me nothing. Hey, I do care about the climate change! I´m usually the one arriving all wet at school because I prefer to walk instead of being driven there. But I think a lot of problems we have today, the way we treat the earth, the way we treat animals, the way we treat each other, could be solved by a tiny and giant shift in our way of thinking.
If we knew that we are not the only intelligence (well, and are we intelligent at all? :-)) we would not treat the earth that bad, would we? We would not act like we were the crown of creation, as we are doing now.
We are special, we can be wonderful beings, but also very destructive and naive. I think that any contact with other civilizations out in space would bring a radical change, but a good one, as I think.
Thinking about alien life is fun, but it has also a spiritual side for me. My everyday worries seem infinitively small when I think about how huge this universe is and how tiny we are.
I have several astronomy softwares and while I surf the virtual universe on my computer I always noticed one thing: Our planet is such a rare and small paradise in a huge dark universe! So if people think we are the only ones in this world, why do they go around and live selfish lives without caring about the environment and the problems we cause future generations to have, destroy this little planet we have to share in spite of other worlds being still too far away? That´s something to think about.

Love
to all the wonderful entities I know on earth and to those I don´t know yet somewhere in deep space,
Anneka
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI@home is great way of supporting the Search for extra-terrestrial Intelligence while using my computer´s idle time.
I think it´s a wonderful project. I hope it will have real success in my lifetime. I´m optimistic that we will receive a message one day. It might not be what we expected, but it will be a big thing, I´m sure.
