Personal background
Apollo 11 splashed down on my 11th birthday. I remember standing in the atrium of our Eichler in San Jose, watching the moon mission on the television and then turning to look at the moon in the sky.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It'll be hard to detect life elsewhere. But it costs little to try, and it would cost a lot not to try.

Whether or not SETI@home finds an interesting signal, the point is that we all banded together to do something more noble than usual with all these CPU cycles!
