Personal background
My name's Alex and I'm 24, living in North Bay, ON

I spend a lot of time thinking about our place in the cosmos and the dual-nature of the universe: the subatomic world and the grand cosmic scale. The Theory of Everything (Grand Unified Theory/Quantum Gravity). Einstein spent his whole life attempting to unite the four forces of the universe into one single equation. At very high temperatures (thousands of trillions of degrees) gravity and electromagnetism become one single unified force. At even higher temperatures all the forces will join, revealing to us many of the universes' most deepest secrets. E=mc2 opened us up to a new era of technology and, subsequently, society.

Other times I'm wondering about the implications of extrasolar life and the effects knowledge of it's existance would have on our society from a technological and soceital perspective, as well as how initial communication with another intelligence would commence. Communication could potentially take many years to establish, and their shit would most probably orbit the Earth the entire time. The first messages may be in the form of pulses of color and geometric shapes, signifying our awareness of the symmetry in nature, or simply intelligence itself (the CN Tower and Statue of Liberty would be a dead giveaway). Perhaps a multitude of visual/audio stimulus, such as images of our planet and culture, and samples of music and some of our greatest works of art, and simple tools. The world's best linguists, mathematicians, biologists, chemists, astronomers and computer scientists and engineers would be called into service to establish a dialogue with our new friends.

I have so much anticipation for this event, so much passion burning inside my soul that I sometimes feel out of control, sometimes feel like I'm falling very fast. Open up your being into the great expanse. Let it fill your body and touch your heart because it is the same heart that every sentient intelligence shares in the Milky Way. Do you look up at the skies and wonder what is waiting to be discovered? Do you imagine new horizons, new worlds, new friends? Do you yearn for the stars as we do, launching probes and broadcasting across the EM band into the depths of interstellar space? If we meet, will you help us make it through the darkness of our minds? How I wish we could do the same for other sentient beings in the Milky Way. Help them develop their society, encourage art and love and peace. Ensure that every being is nourished, every soul is cherished.

I would give it all away to be with them now. My skills, my memories, my sanity, my heart, my soul, my being. There are 300 billion stars in our galaxy. I hope that at least one species knows we're here, arms wide open in love, in friendship. How did you make it after all the milennia? How did you avoid destroying yourselves? Let us be your friends.

My main interests in life are the [[Science]]s, like [[chemistry]], [[astrophysics]] and [[quantum mechanics]]. The Internet is an endless interactive encyclopedia. My screen usually has six or seven windows open on tutorials about chemistry, [[astrobiology]], [[relativity]] and [[astronomy]] news.

Superstring Theory, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Dyson Spheres, Extrasolar Life, Panspermia, Evolution, Superluminal Travel, Tachyons, Quasars, Galaxies, Superclusters, Cosmic Background Radiation, Laplacian Intelligences, Time Dialation, Big Bang, Big Rip, Big Crunch, Pangalactic Intelligences, Globular Clusters, Spiral Galaxies, The Local Supercluster, Supergiants, Constellations, Nebulae, Virtual Particles, Zero Point Energy, Dark Energy, Galactic Empires, First Contact, Antimatter, Warp Drives, Jupiter, Radio Telescopes, The Oort Cloud, The Asteroid Belt, Mars, Valles Marinis, Olympus Mons, Cosmology, Cartooning, Pizza, Dr. Pepper, Star Trek, Stephen Hawking, Douglas Adams, Nature, The Universe, Multiverse, White Holes, Wormholes, Quantum Foam, Planck Time

A lot of time I spend contemplating the vastness of space, and just how small we are on our little blue jem. There's so much to see in our own backyard that it could possibly take explorers hundreds of years to chart it all! And we're not even talking about leaving this backyard to explore the neighborhood, either. When I see an artist's conception of pluto's icy surface (-380F/-230C) or photographs of a 15,000mi/25,000km wide hurricane on Jupiter I wonder why we turned out so different.

If there was one thing in the world that I could have, one wish, I know exactly what it would be. I would want to know the answer to the age-old question: Are we alone? It is the biggest drive in my life, the greatest source of motivation. It is also one of the most profound questions of Mankind. I would give up everything in my life to know the answer.

If there was a second thing, it would be a trip to the centre of the galaxy.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Because I want to see Contact made within my lifetime.
2. We need bigger dishes and more computers!
3. SETI needs to pursue funding more aggresively, and purchase as many second hand computers as it can afford!
