Personal background
You might say I am the product of a mechanized society. Even though I go through life in a rather mechanical fashion, I often point my lens up at the sky and wonder if we are not alone.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm not sure that intelligent life exists on this planet, let alone other planets. I've been searching for years for intelligent life on earth-maybe I need a bigger antenna. Or is that a bigger Aunt Emma-no she's big enough.
As far as the possible dangers of finding ET (and telling him to phone home),
is of course they might not be altogether a friendly bunch-not the type you
want to hang out with at the local watering hole. They might for instance, try
to enslave the whole human race, which depending on what they look like I might not mind. Then again, we might learn something from them, like how to make
Windows 2000 bug-free for instance, or how to clean the dust out that accumulates under the fridge. I think humans should definately send out
bacon into space-there's probably lots of species out there who haven't tried it. I think anything we send out should go Fed-X, it'll save a lot of time.
If we do send out radio signals into space, make sure it's not a rap station
(or country station), just in case these aliens are friendly-we would want them
to think there is intelligent life on this planet. BTW-I use a computer with
a dual P3 mamaboard, 512Leg of Lamb-I mean Meg of Ram, SCSI Ultra 2 H.D.-
good stuff. As far as why I run SETI at home is because that's where my
computer is. BTW-a good way to increase your workunit total with only one computer is to run both the regular screen saver and the command-line version at the same time. If I leave my computer on 24hrs, I will process at least 4 workunits. After a while, your total CPU time exceeds the total time you've been a SETI member. As time goes by I realize I've done far more work than I possibly could have had time for. That in itself blows my mind. Anyway, I think the project is a good idea, after all 3 million SETI
fans can't be all wrong. BTW-I use Windows NT because Win2000 still doesn't
work right after two service packs-I sure hope those aliens are friendly.
