Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why do I participate in the SETI Program?: I believe that only the most narrow minded person would believe that we are living alone as the sole "intelligent" species in this universe. As Stephen Hawkings said and I parapharse: Our history is filled with events that demonstrate what happens when a more advanced culture visits a culture or species with less science ability, it is distroyed in many cases, absorbed in others OR wiped out as being a food source a pest which is not intelligent or rounded up to be poked prodded and studied. Bach to my words now, Not a very good record and I would like us have some chance to find that more intelligent species before we are noticed so that we have a CHANCE to prepare for what MAY come.

I believe that we as a species devote much to little resources in advancement of our knowledge of science as well as the study of our universe. We sit in ignorance and broadcast our location with radio waves for all the universe to hear or see. Right now the first waves are reaching our closest neighbors and "soon" in galactic time will reach other star systems. I believe that we my find out sooner than we would wish it that despite good intentions that we are not alone. That we may become an item for "study" by a more advanced species and culture. The dinosaurs occupied our planet as the dominate species for something like 225 million years while we have been around for something like perhaps for less than 2 mllion and have demonstrated "intelligence" for something less than 10 thousand years. Our sun is is "middle aged" as such things are measured. There are 10 of billions stars in our galaxy alone, how could there NOT be other more intelligent life in our galaxy or in Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy which is colliding with our galaxy on the other side of it?

Are we alone the one intelligent species, one which in the long history of the galaxy is just discovering travel beyond our on planet? I think not and I hope that before we are noticed that we have time to prepare for the "welcome" we may receive from a more advanced culture and species. Perhaps I am being overly pesimistic here, could be but wouldn't it have been a different story if we had been prepared before either world war? Wouldn't history be written differently if dolphins, whales or birds were the dominate species and humanoids just "another" wild animal to be used as food or for study? Its just a "wild" idea on my part but one that may be all together to real.
