Personal background
I'm a 45-year-old semi-retired professional foreign-language translator and linguist, an independent scholar, writer and diarist. I currently live in Seattle, Washington with my wife Julia, but I've traveled extensively in many parts of the world - east and west - both in and out of military and civil service with the U.S. government. I think of myself every day as an explorer and am most happy seeing places I've never seen, doing things I've never done, and especially meeting, listening to and watching and enjoying the company of new and interesting people. I'm a firm believer in the idea every human story needs to be told and spend most of my time developing a philosophy and methodology of writing as a way of life. I love reading on all subjects, most especially science, philosophy, self-help, classical art and architecture, classical and celtic music, Japanense Bonsai, origami, puzzles, mazes and labyrinths.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I've used the Seti@home clients almost from the beginning, but only inconsistently. One thing unwavering has been my belief in the project. Human beings most assuredly have seemingly insurmountable challenges to face right here on this planet, however, perhaps the most forward thinking among us spend much of their time seeking other life "out there" that must certainly be there. The resources devoted to such a project, of course, must be weighed and balanced with priorities here, but it also mustn't be set aside and neglected, ignored or canceled entirely. Finding other life beyond our planet will be a discovery eclipsing even those of Copernicus, Galileo, Darwin and Einstein. Human beings won't take their rightful place in the universal community until it abandons finally its humanocentric views. Seti@home is a struggling but enormously vital and brave step in that direction and I'm proud to do what I can to support it.
