Profile: Moekandu

Personal background
Hmmmm. How do I describe me? I use Moekandu as a DJ name, SF Con badge name,
general user name and all purpose alias. It's unique, part bad pun (Moe can do!),
and has an eastern feel to it (which is perfect considering that I'm a mix of
Norwegian, English and Irish). And sarcastic to boot!

I like most of the parts of filmmaking and am willing to suffer through the
less pleasant parts to do what I love. That pretty much sums up all my other
interests too: writing, screenwriting, DJing and music in general, 3D
animation, PC's, programming, networking, and loosening the screws of people
whose screws are just a little too tight. Everyone should have a screw loose.

I also enjoy hanging out with friends, good food, and attempting to appreciate
the life, love and beauty of our universe a little more each day.
And art, too.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Well, of course life exists outside of our gravity well. What it is and who
it is. . . Well that's the big question, isn't it? SETI@Home won't answer
that. It wasn't designed to in fact. But it is a start. And it's the
right place to start at. No experiment is without value. Whether we gain
the knowledge we were expecting or not, we still learn in the process. With
luck, we will discover signals from another intelligent civilization. If not,
well, we still have a truly incredible mass of analyzed data about radio
signals intercepted by the earth. Who knows what insights we will gain from
this information?

It excites me to see how the project has grown and matured
over the past two years. Unlike most, I am actually looking forward to the
next client that will take even more CPU cycles, because it means that much
more science being done by my computers. It means we have learned enough to
refine our search. All I request is SMP for Windows, cause I've got a dual CPU
system, Eliste,(yes, I name my computers) that's just begging for it.

I don't think we are ready to set up a beacon. It's one thing to listen quietly
and quite another thing to advertise ourselves to whatever may come. When we
get to the point where we can set up a big (I mean really BIG) beacon on Pluto
(possibly using the planet itself as reactionary mass for the beacon), then I
think we'll be ready to handle what comes. It always pays to be cautious.

So keep crunching, we have a lot more work to do.
