Personal background |
Hehe, so many signals, so few computers...
Since signing up for SETI@Home in September 2000, I've gone the whole upgrade route. From screen saver to command line, bringing all my PCs online, overclocking, watercooling, processor upgrades, assembling spare parts into new PCs, adding SETI-Queue, it's all been a mad scramble to get more WU output. As of this writing I have an old Sony 266MHz laptop, a pair of ASUS BP6 motherboards running their two Celerons at 560 and 570, a CeleronII at 780, and a pair of T'birds at about 1400. These run continuously except a T'bird that gets shutdown nightly for gaming. :) I hope to show some restraint and not do any more upgrades until the AMD 760MPx chipset comes out.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
It was easy to get hooked on SETI because it is a GOOD project. In the never-ending struggle between knowledge and ignorance, the SETI project is a strong ally for knowledge. As a mostly volunteer effort it creates few objections from non-supporters. It sets the stage for future global distributive processing projects that could have a tangible benefit for mankind. It fosters an awareness of the possibility of ET life. And, of course, it might find something! Not to mention the fun of battling for higher and higher stats!
