Profile: Zefram Cochrane

Personal background
I was born in Santa Clara, California, a month before the United States turned 200 years old. I live in Silicon Valley, and I work for PayPal, Inc. over on the Penninsula. I've been in various occupations, ranging from a retail sales associate, and paperboy, to a technical support engineer, preproduction engineer, and network operations administrator. My hobbies include online gaming (in the form of MUDs or MMORPGS), reading and writing fiction, engaging in the pursuit of music (in the form of singing or playing instruments).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Doctor Carl Sagan wrote that this universe is pretty big, and that it would be a waste if we were the only ones within it. I agree with that observation wholeheartedly. It would be arrogant presumption to think that the universe was created solely for the human race. But this is not to say that I beleive we should be contacted by extraterrestrial lifeforms. I'm not entirely sure we're ready for such a thing, however, when it happens we will react according to our behavior. I just hope that the ETs would be wise enough to understand us. Who knows if a handshake might be a cultural expression akin to a declaration of war? We have problems with cultural faux pas here on planet Earth let alone intergalactic visitors.

This does not belittle the search, however, and I think the answer to the question of whether life exists on planets other than Earth needs to be found. It would, at the very least, provide us with a better understanding of our own existance. Perhaps we'll gain enlightenment along the way.
