Personal background
SO here we are, finally beyond (we hope) the point of total self annihilation, looking to answer the big question once and for all. Having just read of the exoplanet count breaking 100, I get the feeling we might be creeping closer to our answer. I've been keeping tabs on science since I was a kid, and even now that I'm pushing 30, I still love hearing of each discovery that turns the old worldview on its ears. From the discovery of 51 Pegasus B to the oceans of Europa to the recent dicovery of a Jupiter-analog orbiting 55 Cancri, each new piece completes a more dazzling picture than any of us had imagined, and the pieces we continue to find reshape our view of the place we occupy in the universe. I hope, like most of us here, we as a race continue to keep our minds open as we continue to explore, so that when we finally do get the message, our answer will be just as worth listening for to them. Good luck and happy crunching...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It exists, that much is certain. Where we find it first? Mars likely, in a glacier somewhere under the surface, but that's just my two cents worth. I think the most likely benefit will be to return our concentration to developing a nearer and for the time being more beneficial piece of real estate we see very clearly every night. A biosphere of any shape or form on Mars will put to a grinding halt any serious effort to colonize for some time (treehuggers of the galaxy unite!!), giving us a chance to make the most of the Moon as a training ground/stepping off point, a new Kansas City, Missouri if you will. A gateway to the rest of the system.

A beacon? I guess, though that can be a double edged sword. Tell them where we are and they'll come, or maybe we tell them and they'll run like Heck. It would be fun to see which :-) What do we say? "Here we are, talk to us if you want to know the rest!"

Why? Because it beats sitting on my hands waiting for someone else to do it. I think if where going to find them soon, whether by their design or pure chance, this is the only way for certain. I just hope its not an info-mercial we pick up :-(
