Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
i run seti@home because i couldn't forgive myself for not participating now that i have the resources. same reason, i suppose, that i attended john glen's homecoming parade in ohio after his 3 orbits. same reason i blew off exams to stay glued to walter cronkite's coverage of apollo 13 my freshman year. same reason i mourned carl sagan's death as deeply as john lennon's.
wish there was better online assistance in working through the setup, configuring multiple computers, etc. but i'll muddle through. wish the whole idea of harnessing the vast amount of underutilized computing power across america were more visible. too many good problems in need of help to not make this a high priority.
how about shaming corporations to support efforts to publicize the opportunity. why shouldn't dell, hp, apple, etc. load the software on every new machine and spend a few pennies encouraging their customers to use their products for something besides emailing jokes and playing spider solitaire? |
