Profile: asamaras

Personal background
Name: Athanasios Samaras (sakis for short)
Age : Born on Feb 22nd 1969 , do the maths...
Occupation: Well a nice question ...
I currenty employed by Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in Greece as a SysAdmin and Technical support of Civil Engineering Computer Lab.
At the same time I am working as a developer and a preseller for a company that prvides PayTV, VoD and in-doors entertainment for the Hospitality industry.
Computer related questions: I got into this drug called "computer science" almost when I was 14 (about mid 80s , 1984 if I remember right), starting with the famous Sinclair Spectrum 16/48, Commodore-64/16/128/ plus, Amstrad CPC x64/x128 and PCW, then moved to a more interesting plafrom, at the time I desided to study in ex USSR, we used to use some mainframes that where based on parallel cpus; about 32 8-bit processors, working on a dump (or dumm) terminals, after a period moved to something I could afford (my first 32/16 bit computer), so Atari 520 came to the spot-light. Since then it's been already 14 years that I work on PCs as a programmer /developer / presales / engineer / techniciant / support etc, you see in Greece you have to know almost every aspect of computer science plus some more. Also I was involved in some large projects as project engineer and then as project manager. Spend some time on creating a methodology for project management by addopting PRINCE, making sure it can be implemented for concreat type of projects. Then I was called to evaluate suggest and test a trainig cource for non-technical persons introducing them to PCs-Windows-Office, cource called European Computer Driver Licence (ECDL). Actually it was pretty hard to compress the knowledge and create crash-cources of 60h in total to teach someone how to use Ms office starting from the point when they do not know how to switvh the PC on.
Coputer languages: BASIC (BASICA/GW/Quick basic/Visual Basic/Super basic and some SMC basic), C, C++, PHP, ASP, HTML, Fortran, some Clipper and Cobol, limited x86 Assembly (x86, Z80, 68xxx).
Databases: Oracle 8/8i, Microsoft SQL server 6/7, MySQL and Microsoft Access.
Human Languages: Greek, Russian, English, limited French, Italian; Really limited: Bulgarian, Slovac.
Hobbies: Movies (Sci-Fi, Action, Thrillers, Comedy .... fill in the rest your self), unforunately I suffer from short term memory overflow, so do not ask me anything about names or dates, but as soon as I see something, I remember it; so movies movies movies.... Also enjoy long philosophical conversations and ananlysis of diffrent situations. I love to attend talks about Human history especially that part that we usually call pre-historical, given the fact that Atlantis belongs to this era.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why SETI, well, back in the mid 90s I got aware of SETI, and I thougth it was a coou idea. Althought I do not belive that this approach is the most recommended to locate E.T.L.F., I do belive that the results may indicate some strange and probably interesting things about how large is this univerce (just imagine that we got a strange signal that is a reflection of an emmition originated from Earth). The results may be proccessed on a second stage to generate alot of other outcomes such as the general noice emitted by stellar objects, or even to look back in the history, I leave this to you to evaluate.
Also I do belive that one of the most valuable contribution of SETI project is the community itself prooving that there are some persons out there willing to contribute the spare time of their computer without a tengible return.
I hope at some point to be able to see some papers based on SETI 's result.
As about suggestions, I think that the Web Site may (actually should) be improved with simple things like back, previous results etc on the db generated dynamical pages. Probably also would be a nice idea to have a client availble for 64 bit windows platforms.
At present I didi not test the client for linux, I guess this is #2 in my SETI list just after I install windows client on 60 PCs in this lab.
