Personal background
That's us on vacation looking for ET at EAA Airventure 2006 in Oshkosh, WI.

We live in Watertown, WI, and both work for the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation. We plan to buy a small ranch in western Texas if they will ever let us retire. So if any of you have a ranch for sale within 100 or so miles of N32? W99? (or near one of the canals on Mars), let us know! Our interests are sci-fi, bicycling, bull riding, hiking, geocaching, ham radio, and flying. We have our own Cessna 150, and would like to have our own landing strip on our ranch. During our vacation in April of '04 we toured the VLA and loved the area. The elevation is a bit high to get a stock 150 off the ground, so I am looking for more power for it. We started running SETI@home back in '99, but it didn't seem to run well. We have wireless internet access at home, and SETI@home and BOINC run great, so we let them run wild!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
We both think there is a very good chance life beyond earth exists. We are just one small part of God's great experiment. Being at the cooler (I think) outer spiral of our galaxy, we think we are probably one of the more adavanced civilizations. Some solar systems near the center of our galaxy are probably still molten masses. And other galaxies are probably similarly situated. We don't have a handle on disease on this planet, so attempting to visit a planet with unknown organisms could spell doom for our planet without proper precautions. But then maybe we'll find the fountain of youth out there!

Advertising our presence might not be a good idea. We keep a firewall here just to prevent someone from finding my presence on the internet, so telling some possibly unfriendly cosmic neighbor that we are here doesn't sound safe. But we like to keep our ears open! Working for state government, we know how bad budgets and politicians can be, so receiving any help from the public at large is greatly appreciated. That is why we volunteer our spare CPU cycles for the project.

Now, about that ranch on Mars...
