Personal background
39 y/o male from San Diego CA USA, home to the Palomar telescope, largest single glass lens before the new technology of land based telescopes. I am always curious about space, science and also the earth we live on; its history present and future. I read a lot, whether it's news, science news espcially, or trying to learn something new and expand my understanding about life beyond 9-5 working and paying bills. Gardening and landscaping are a passion too, have been landscaping a few years with my partner, tho I tend to be specialized in xeriscape and local type native plants as well as anything with thorns that is exotic or ideal for the climate here...though I also have a thing for orchids.(He is a tropicals freak :).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I find it funny that there is a belief in America for what is called 'intelligent design.' It is repackaged bible fundamentalism at its worst and mocks the nature of human beings to learn and grow beyond our present puerile state of cultural developemnt...leading to intellectual stagnation and recidivism. Yeah, I am political too but I won't be listing all that here.
I have studied several of our worlds religions and while I cannot shake an abiding belief in something greater, it is not of a watchful being who waits to mourn each bird that falls from the sky etc. It is for me a state like nirvana wherein we evolve and understanding that permeates us and resonates with the universe, a state that once achieved we leave being as we become part of that consciousness and shuck our personal identity becoming one with the consciousness we strove to achieve. That said....(I'm not a new age freak with my tarot cards heheh....
I look to the skies and see only so few of the possibilities from here and know that there has to be other life that is or has formed elsewhere in our galaxy if not in our cluster. I don't expect intergalactic communication unless there are some truly advanced and evolved lifeforms but intragalactic seems reasonable to me,,,just do we deserve it or have we not grown up enough yet to be considered ready for actual contact? I hope its out there, the 'deus ex machina' that could help us leap beyond our corporate, profit driven world of have and have nots...millions starving or ravaged by war or disease and those of us too disenfranchised to evenfeel free here in the US, economically, financially or politically....
