Profile: Caine Hörr

Personal background

I am 28 years of age and I am a freelance web designer from Sebastopol,
California.

I have always maintained an avid interest in science and technology since I
was around 9 or 10 years of age (probably well before, just less defined).

I have always enjoyed going to the local planetarium at the Santa Rosa Junior
College or visiting outdoor star gazing activities (such as
that located at the Sugarloaf State Park).

Some of my hobbies include woodworking, playing music and watching sci-fi
movies - my favorite titles being:

"The Matrix"
"Contact"
"Close Encounters"
"2001 - A Space Odyssey"
"Star Trek" (All episodes and movies)

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

Q1. Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? If so, when and how will humans
discover it? What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?

A1. Although I do not know whether extraterrestrial life exists,
I do believe that life does exist elsewhere in the universe. To
paraphrase a line from "Contact" - "If we are alone, doesn't it seem like an
aweful waste of space?"
As to the possible benefits and dangers of such a
discovery - I would say YES! Yes, there would be both probable and possible
benfeits as well as an equal amount of dangers. Hollywood has defined most E.T.
types as the stereotypical dreaded destruction of the human race (9 times out
of 10). However, the reality is if we are to ever have a "First Contact" with
another civilization, there really are several opportunities to learn and
exchange such a wealth of knowledge. We would also have a model by which to
compare ourselves with - whether it is similar or dissimilar makes no
difference, at least we would know that we are not alone. The dangers could
be real in terms of biological issues or even in terms of behavioral
mannerisms between species.
