Personal background
Hello! I am 37 as of this writing (Oct 2013) and have been a constant, if somewhat slow member of Seti@home for (HOLY CRAP!) nearly 15 years now (June 1999) WOW! I have been living in Seattle (home town) for about 6 years now, after gallivanting hither and yon from Atlanta to Sioux Falls, and even Metro Makati (Philippines, Kumusta Ka Po!!). Believe me, if you want a global experience, moving tens of thousands of miles around the country/globe then all the way back home is one helluva way to get that experience!!! In the working world, I've worked for IBM as a business Process and Procedures Analyst, and Business Manager working on optimizing the business operations for a LARGE consumer electronics company, been a hands on consumer electronics and IT technician for nearly 2 decades now in addition to my business process analysis experience (sounds almost like I'm looking for a job... hmmm) and am an experienced and certified IT networking specialist. For hobbies; I build PC systems for consumers and small enterprise use, design and implement consumer and commercial audio/video systems including head-end and tail-end commercial IPTV systems (yeah, I actually think it's fun!) and play video games on every console under the sun. I also like to work on cars and when I have the time and money, I race the cars I work on with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). It is a great and safe way to vent some pent up emotions without causing harm to anyone or anything except my tires! I am also sought out by friends and family for my computer and mechanical expertise anytime their computer/car/bicycle/home theater system/RC car breaks down! I am SUCH a giver!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I absolutely believe that there is life outside our solar system. I find it very egocentric of the human species to believe that we are the only sentient beings in a universe as immense as this!
I don't think that Seti@home is large enough in scale to be the sole means of discovery of life, but the idea is right, and if the number of members is any indication, I am not alone in my assesment.
I am really a fence sitter so to speak in regards to benefits/dangers of such a discovery. I can't even venture a guess as to what kind of life exists out there, nor how they will react to being contacted by a group of curious xenophobes such as the human race!
I think that sending a beacon is a great idea, and it should be kept simple in its message, and sent in every imagineable format including mathematical and binary, because you never know!
I personally run Seti for a number of reasons. I really like being a part of the largest single computational excersize in history, I am extraordinarily interested in space and other life forms, and I hope we can prove the government and all the nay sayers wrong in the near future! And the screen saver is pretty! LOL
