| Personal background |
Hello! I am 28 as of this writing (January 2005) and have been a constant, if somewhat slow member of Seti@home for over 5 years now (June 1999) WOW! I have been living in Atlanta Georgia for about 3 years now, but originally I hail from Seattle, I guess I just needed a change of pace! Belive me, if you want a change of pace, moving 3400 miles and from the Northwest to the Southeast is a change!!! I established this modest group with my best friend of many years Dan, and with waxing and waining interest, other friends have come and gone, leaving Dan and I the steadfast believers! In the working world, I work for a large blue computer company as a business Process and Procedures Analyst working on optimizing the business operations for a LARGE consumer electronics company. For hobbies, I build PC systems for individual users and small enterprise use. I also like to work on cars and when I have the time and money, I race the cars I work on with the Atlanta chapter of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). It is a great and safe way to vent some pent up emotions without causing harm to anyone or anything except my tires! I am also sought out by friends and family for my computer and mechanical expertise anytime their computer or car breaks down! I am SUCH a giver!
In reality, I just want to find intelligent life so I can have a hot green skinned alien mail order bride!
I also recently built a computer for a friend using the AMD Athlon64 3200+ CPU and that thing is cranking out old school Seti work units at a rate of under 2 hours per unit! And that is before I set it up to run Seti as a service! It's no fair, because he now has one computer that is doing as many work units by itself as all 3 of my computers combined! I recommend an Athlon64 CPU HIGHLY to anyone that wants to push your results through the roof! |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I absolutely believe that there is life outside our solar system. I find it very egocentric of the human species to believe that we are the only sentient beings in a universe as immense as this!
I don't think that Seti@home is large enough in scale to be the sole means of discovery of life, but the idea is right, and if the number of members is any indication, I am not alone in my assesment.
I am really a fence sitter so to speak in regards to benefits/dangers of such a discovery. I can't even venture a guess as to what kind of life exists out there, nor how they will react to being contacted by a group of curious xenophobes such as the human race!
I think that sending a beacon is a great idea, and it should be kept simple in its message, and sent in every imagineable format including mathematical and binary, because you never know!
I personally run Seti for a number of reasons. I really like being a part of the largest single computational excersize in history, I am extraordinarily interested in space and other life forms, and I hope we can prove the government and all the nay sayers wrong in the near future! And the screen saver is pretty! LOL
