Personal background

My name is Gary Nelson, tgnfl@comcast[/url].net.   I have been watching the stars since I was a kid back
in the 1960s. With money I made from cutting grass, I bought my first telescope. .

The telescope wasn't the greatest quality, but I
could see Mars and Jupiter and the rings around Saturn. I was forever staring at
the mountains on the moon.  You might say I was hooked.

I'm now a retired a Mr. mom with three
wonderful kids ages 33, 11 & 13. My 33 year-old daughter has her own
family and has degrees in archaeology and journalism- I have passed the
love of exploring the unknown to her as well!  I now teach the two I
have at home the wonder of the world and how to explore the night sky.

I am also an artist.  I like
to sketch, paint and play the guitar. I just moved to a small town in
Florida where I really enjoy taking walks on the beaches.  At night,
the stars here are unbelievable .

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

When I look at the night sky and gaze at the stars,
my thoughts go beyond the blackness filling sky. I think about the million of
stars beyond the immediate blackness and past the outer region of the
cosmos.

I can't help but think that somewhere, millions of light
years away, a swirling mass of dust and hydrogen gas are giving birth to a new
star. That very star could become the center of a new galaxy. If the conditions
are right, life will take root.

I contemplate while looking toward
the vastness of space...In a distant galaxy, are Dinosaurs roaming? Could a Homo
Erectus be taking his first step?  Could a new mother be rocking her baby
to sleep?

The same cosmic parcels that produced life on this
planet exist in the make up of all star systems.

Will we ever receive
transmission from other life forms?  I think so. Though, even at the speed
at light, it will take millions of years for a signal to reach us. Maybe a
missed signal has all ready come and gone.  (The WOW! signal, for
example???)  Or perhaps the signal for us is just weeks away.  If we
do receive a signal, will the universe from which it was generated still be in
existence?  Will Earth still be here if someone from another universe
receives transmissions we generated?

There are a lot of
ifs...

There is one thing for sure...If we don't continue
searching and listening-we will NEVER know.

Hang in there-Never give up
the search!
