Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

I do believe it is very likely that extraterrestrial life exists. I believe the discovery of this life will be either via SETI research or direct contact from another race. The benefits of friendly contact are advances in technology and medicine etc. However if human kind provokes an advanced species out of ignorance and fear of what we do not understand the outcome could be devastating to say the least.

Transmitting a beacon could either invite friendly civilizations to make contact, or let hostiles know that we are not so advanced. This could invite invasion (assuming only from a human standpoint that evil exists in other beings as well). As for what information we should send, I would think something indicating that our intentions are peaceful and explorative in nature and not to much else.

I run Seti@home because I believe that SETI is good valid science worth doing, and I want to be a part of the discovery that will change the world as we know it. The only suggestion I would make is that we should give serious thought to what methods (other than in the rf spectrum) might be used for very long-range communications and pursue them as well. This certainly means thinking outside the box. I have always believed that what seems impossible now becomes the norm once we have learned how to do it.
