Personal background
I live near Seattle, Washington, USA. I am 52 years old, enjoy following general scientific discoveries (large and small). My hobbies include intermediate woodworking, private pilot and electronic design/creation. My favorite thought is: "May I always be the type of person my dog thinks I am".
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that extraterrestrial life exists! It is unfortunate that more people do not believe the the existance of sentient life beyond our tiny world. With all the information available to the average person in developed countries, it is difficult to distinguish fact from almost fact and fiction. Unless a person follows scientific discoveries, they will demand proof of the existance of extraterrestrial life. It is the hope of many, that SETI will provide that proof. I endorse this effort as being secure, controlled and systematic. When unique information is discovered, it will be surrounded with a blanket of documentation which will provide a notion of believability for those that do not follow the efforts of SETI. This information will activitate and energize more people to become supporters of this and other scientific research into the frontier beyond our world.

One of the most stimulating books I have read was "Contact" by Carl Sagen. This provided a good example of what could happen when first contact occurs.

One of the bigest questions is; if the universe is as big and old as we now believe it is, what existed prior to time zero? Is time infinate? Through the ages man has developed an understanding based on 'fact' that many generations later was shown to be wrong. As mankind probes any new fontier, new discoveries are bound to redefine the 'facts' of the past. SETI is in the process of changing our understanding of life in the universe. It is not the only frontier program, but it is looking where no man has looked before. And all we have to do is listen and learn. Much like our children, we will grow and mature by listening and observing. Perhaps someday we will be able to return the favor.
