Personal background
I am now in my late 20's, with the same enthusiasm for science fiction and fact since I was 7 or 8. It was my father who sparked and kept my interest, a keen science fiction reader and science fact debater. I will always remember the conversations we would have on the way back from swimming or the tip, the Universe, the thoughts the rising moon would give us and all the creative sci-fi that fuelled the technology being born around us.
I am still in the UK working in Archaeology, and writing electronica music. Films, TV series and documentaries still give me fuel for thought, and much of my spare time is spent thinking about the vastness of it all, looking for patterns and cycles that repeat from the tiny to the galaxian.
Yes, I am a bit of a dreamer (something my girlfriend finds a little hard to live with!).

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe humans to be far too self-important. To believe that we are the only intelligent life form in the Universe would be both stupid and ignorant.
The chances of us finding it are, however, probably very slim in our lifetimes. If we do begin to explore the galaxy, let alone the universe, then I am sure we will take our greed with us. A very bad thing. We need sort out our problems at home first.
There are many benefits and dangers in the discovery of intelligent life, science fiction writers have been exploring this for decades. However, I do believe we are blinded with the limits of our own consciousness, perception and emotions. Compare a human to a sheep, to an ant, to a cat. So different in one small ecosystem.
Mathematics, geometry, and binary opposition would seem to be the key. A universial language and concept that comes with intelligent life. This should be the basis of any beacon we send. We will know when the time is right to send it.
In the meantime, SETI is our best option for searching. The SETI@home project is something I dreamed of as a kid, being able to contribute to the search. Now I can. The only suggestions I have would be an acceleration of the project. More advertising in computer magazines, science fiction magazines. Capture the hearts and dreams of the young and they will be with us for life.
