Profile: Harrison Wheeler

Personal background
Age: 38
Occupation: Flight Attendant
Hobbies: Amateur Astronomy, Bird watching, Travel.

I have done about 6000 hrs of computing time for Seti up until March. I have had to step aside for several months, But I'm back & with a faster machine!

My girlfriend & I are currently living in a 5th wheel trailer and are touring the country. We started about 5 months ago and select our next destination based on bird migrations, local events, weather and dark skies. I got my first telescope about 2 years ago and have been consumed by astronomy. Unfortunately, my current interest in astro-imaging makes my telescope a bit obsolete. I built a home-made quickcam and have been trying some photos of the planets with little success.

Dream Telescope: 10" Ritchey-Cretien but... I would easily settle for a 10" LX200... if anyone is looking for the "Perfect Christmas Gift Idea" ;)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, I think life must surely exist SOMEWHERE in the universe. Though we may never discover intelligent life, it seems a waste not to try. Until we know if our nearest neighboring stars may harbor life (we certainly have found a lot of planets circling many of them) we should aggressively look. Like most explorations throughout human history, we sometime discover MUCH more than we were looking for! I think the only dangers will be from ourselves. Many religous organization will feel threatened and challanged and act accordingly. Fortunately, as history has shown, they eventually find a way to incorporate it into their "beliefs" and accept the truth.

2. Yes. The message should be simple. I love Sagan's suggestion of sending prime numbers followed a simple "Hello".

3. It is a very easy "hands off" way to make a legitimate contribution to Science. SETI may never discover anything, OR it could make most important discovery in human history... it may never uncover anything. I think Sagan's words say it all: "Absense of evidence is not evidence of absense".
