Personal background
I hope to boost my contribution to seti with a new AMD1.4 system I have almost finished putting together, or course that will be shared with distributed.net

Still anything is better than the old P200 I have been running for the last 5 years.

I am a hacker, not a web hacker just a real hacker, I love finding out how things work and bending them to my will, like the Sega Dreamcast VMU.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am a bad boy, I hacked the original SETI release.
Now before you jump up and down and point fingers listen to why I did it.

First of all I did not do it to cause problems, the seti community is (on the whole) a very friendly place and it seemed like a good laugh.

Why:
Why not? well normally free downloads come with 10 page ULAs but not seti and I spent sometime making sure that I could legaly edit the exe file (windoze).

How:
Whipped out my little hex editor and found the list of countries.
I though if I edit one of the country names it would only effect my local copy but instead MARS became a country in the big list of seti countries.

What happened next:
After a short while the MARS country was removed from the main list but you could still see it via a direct URL but then that went as well.
I got some wierd mail based on the fact I was the only user operating from MARS.

Dear Being B_o_l_l_o_x,

On behalf of the Benevolent Intra-planetary Group Residing on Planet Earth (BIGRoPE), we hereby condemn your actions. You have revealed your true origins as evidenced by records maintained at http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/country_81309.html. By resolving that you are in fact residng on Mars you have confirmed the earthlings' suspicions regarding intelligent life throughout the universe. Did you stop to think that because of you, tomorrow a Walmart will probably open business on the ear lobe of the man in the moon? Come to think of it, that's not a bad idea!! Hail Bollox of Mars.

and

Are there any good restaurants on Mars? They'll be the best indicator of ET
intelligence.

I can't find my replies but they were quite comical

and remember, don't hack free software just because they do not know any better :)
