Personal background
I am an elderly retired procedural programmer from England resident in Brighton.
I run a number of desktop and laptop computers of various ages.
They all now dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.10.
They all run BOINC with SETI and other applications.
I do this as a matter of course.
I notice that the Windows XP versions of BOINC install with no problem.
I notice that the Ubuntu 8.10 versions of BOINC install with considerable difficulty.
They are either old versions or do not support the graphics which I love or involve spending many hours diving into the root of the Linux operating system
only to find that it is an unstable development version which is being installed.
Probably this is why the pre-installed version of BOINC is a very old version
which does not support graphics and requires a lot of scarcely understood fiddling.
Such is the speed of development of Ubuntu 8.10 that these problems will have been fixed by the time you read this.
I run SETI because I have the spare clock cycles and I do not believe in flying saucers.
