Profile: Hafoc

Personal background
Colonel "Bull" Hafoc is 2ic (under the legendary Generalissimo Max Syko) of WoConCom. World Conspiricy Command, "The THEY people" (tm), is a multicontinental Evil Overlord Organization, which has been "Making Bad Things Happen for 60 Years." (tm) It is headquartered somewhere beneath central North America; NYSE symbol EVIL.

Colonel Hafoc is in charge of day-to-day operations of an organization involved in so many conspiricies that it at present employs three-fifths of the world's population. Naturally, this would keep Colonel Hafoc quite busy even if he were not so completely dedicated to his work that he even made sure, personally, that you didn't get that promotion you wanted last year. However, he does find some time for his hobbies of oppression, haiku, and making dried strawflower arrangements.

He has been interested in SETI for some time, since he believes it makes a fine diversion from the Roswell UFO Coverup, one of his favorite ongoing projects. However, he was unable to participate until recently due to the fact that the Supreme Command Bunker did not have internet access. (Don't laugh. Stringing fiber optic cable two miles down an abandoned copper mine crawling with rabid bats and long-forgotten booby traps is no mean feat.)

He currently resides Somewhere Out There.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why not run it? I'm not using my computer at four in the morning. Go ahead and use it while I sleep. Knock yourself out.

I don't think there is much chance this will work. I suspect that in a hundered years we'll have some (radio or other) technology which will make interstellar communications with today's tech look as silly as trying to do it with smoke signals. But should it succeed, the benefits would be enormous; should it fail, nobody gets hurt. Given that, how can we not go ahead?
