Profile: the cyber ninja

Personal background
I hail from Newcastle Upon Tyne in the UK. I'm employed as a network engineer at a local college, and am a keen photographer. I am also heavily into gadgets and technology and like to know what makes things tick. I undertake online computer gaming on all makes and models of console as well at the PC. These are traits that my teenage son has inherited from me, to the dismay of my wife!! My son and I are also members of a local astronomical society. The society is fortunate enough to have their own observatory, and members can observe the planets, and watch the skies till the cows come home.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that there probably is life somewhere out there, and that it will be discovered through something like SETI. I do believe however, that it probably won't be discovered within my lifetime. When it is found, it will be when we least expect it. I don't think that we should be advertising to much information regarding our own existance however. We take it for granted that intelligent life would be friendly, but how do we really know? If alien life was as far advanced as the general public assume, won't they already have found and be observing us? Maybe intelligent life forms are watching us, who knows? We run SETI@home because we like to think we can make a difference, and it would be really cool if something interesting was discovered and you were the one who found it.
