Profile: m.k. smith

Personal background
i am m.k. smith. after many geographic explorations over the past three decades i have ended up in ashtabula, ohio, where i live w/ my s.o., jessie. plus two dogs, ming and monk. and two cats, george and gracie (after the whales in movie you may be familiar w/). i was born in 1956, and grew up on a protestant seminary campus where my father taught theology. i have never had much interest in theology however, and consider myself a secular humanist buddhist. i have been fascinated w/ science my entire life, and have been told my first word was "light." i am an electronics technician, but do not consider myself a computer wizard. i can hold my own, and my knowledge of them has grown to a comfortable level. i have a hard time relating to technophobes. i tinker around and repair things in my spare time. i have a pattern where i watch my favorite tv programs and movies, and leave my computer on so i can look up stats on shows, actors and so forth, while keeping up w/ my e-mail, so it sits here doing nothing a lot of the time. seti@home is a perfect use for it, while it is waiting to be used for something.
several other interests of mine include tantra, floatation tank science (formerly called sensory deprivation, now called r.e.s.t: reduced environmental stimulation therapy), and progressive music (such as king crimson and brian eno). i have had my own homemade floatation tank many years, and find it very relaxing and mind expansive. (the picture is before a king crimson concert in chicago, 2001.)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
seti@home is a noble undertaking. after receiving much criticism over the years from narrow-minded, myopic cretins, there was clearly a need to turn the search into a grassroots, cost-efficient movement. it is a hell of a lot cheaper, and fosters the growth of a community of optimistic people forced to exist in pessimistic times. the answer is probably on a geologic scale of time, but it hardly matters. we can look and listen, so we might as well do it. since i am have an existential view of things most of the time, the process of trying to answer this question adds meaning and inherent worth to being alive for this blink in the span of the universe.
