Personal background
I am a programmer for Dakota State University, Technology Outreach Services, Technology Support Services, for the last 10 years. Computers are a hobby of mine. Well, I should say computer hardware and networking is a hobby. Programming is a challange. And I can't resist a challange. That's why I made it a profession. Learning about computer hardware and networking only supports my obsession to write code.

I have 3 dual CPU servers running BOINC in my home computer lab on cable connection using 100Mb LAN and 802.11g WiFi.

  • dual Celeron 466 MHz - Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition w/SP1
  • dual Pentium III 700 MHz - Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition w/SP1
  • dual Pentium III 1.0 GHz - Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition w/SP1

On occation, I add my workstations to the mix:

  • Pentium 4 3.0 GHz - Windows Media Center
  • Pentium 4 3.0 GHz - Windows XP Pro w/SP2
  • Pentium 4 3.0 GHz - Windows XP Home w/SP2
  • Pentium III 800 MHz - Windows XP Pro w/SP2
  • AMD K6-506 - Windows 98
  • AMD 386-40 - MS-DOS 6.2

Most of these units are like Frankenstien's monster. Pieces Parts all mixed together but they are running. Even the 386-40 didn't have a problem with Y2K.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As much as we know about DNA and the possible key to life, it's only a matter of time before we find that life exists elsewhere. The big question is if there is intelligent life elsewhere. If for nothing else, planitary defence. We can not assume alien life forms will be friendly. Listening to the Universe is a great way to find that existance.
