Personal background
I enjoy running SETI@home chiefly because I believe that humanity must become aware of the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life.

Hopefully the discovery of intelligent beings from other star systems will force us to make a concerted effort to build a real manned space program and establish a permanent and self sustaining presence in this star system.

Even though any signal from an alien race could be from one tha has long since died out the notion that the vast resources of space are not ours alone to exploi...errr...explore will be enough to convince everyone that we do not have the rest of histroy to explore our solar system and pour the necessary resources into finding a viable means of traveling between the stars on something less than a timescale of decades, centuries or millennia.

I realize that this may sound less than idealistic and I want to add that I hope that we can view any aliens we hear from as friends.

Then again civilizations that simply assume the best when making first contact with strangers tend to end up like the Arawak who encountered Columbus or the Native Americans who assisted the first settlers in New England and unwittingly signed their own eviction notice.

The point is that competition is what has always driven our space program. Humanity will die if we do not spread our population beyond one planet and eventually one star system. It make take years, decades, centuries or millennia, or eons but if we do not expand our race will die.

To borrow from the Holy Bible, our end may come "like a thief in the night" and we have no idea how long we have to prepare.

Plus, I've always been a fan of science fiction and I am curious to know what real intelligent extraterrestrial life is (or in this case probably was) like.

I had an account on the old version of Seti@home but it was probobly created after the May 14th cutoff date so it was not transferred over.
