Profile: John-Scott Theron

Personal background
Hi there!

My name's John-Scott and I'm from Surrey in England. I’m currently on a gap year after finishing my A-Levels. I was born on 11/09/1985. Not a good day come 2001!

I’m a big fan of Science Fiction television programmes such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Farscape, Space Above and Beyond, Andromeda etc. I am also a great lover of Martial Arts and Action movies. I do a Martial Art called Choi Kwang Do which I have been doing since I was 8 years old. Another of my main hobbies is computing. I enjoy all aspects of computing, especially gaming. I’m not such a big fan of books. When I do read I really get into it, but it’s usually only for coursework. Other than that I rarely pick up a book at all, let alone and finish it!

So where does SETI@Home come in? Well it’s a combination of interests. I like Science Fiction and am interested in the question "Does Extra terrestrial life exist in the universe". I am a computer hardware enthusiast and so seeing how quickly my computer can do Work Units is a buzz. And it gives me something to keep looking at when i'm bored to see how high my stats are!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think extraterrestrial life does exist somewhere. I have watched too many Science Fiction stories to think otherwise. The universe is so large (or so they say!) so there has to be at least one other planet like Earth in a Solar System like our own....unless all other species have died out long ago. Which would suck...kind of like turning up for a party and finding out everyone has already left!

I’m not sure if mankind should send a beacon for others to find. I’m not sure we are mature enough yet. I look at the religious and racist issues going on at home and foreign places and it makes me think that if we are like that to our own people, what are we capable of towards our alien neighbours?

I think the project is an excellent idea. Simply the idea of getting computers around the world to do the dirty work of analysing data is ingenious! I doubt however that we will find much of significance with the project in terms of ET's. We might find some other interesting things about space but I don't think that ET will be near enough to hear our call. It’s possible that another better type of deep space communication exists and we just don't know how to tune in on it yet. Likewise, our neighbours may not know how to tune into us, may not know we are sending a beacon to them, or may simply not want to answer it.
