Profile: Rod Olsen

Personal background
Retired Australian of the 1940s, with a passion for history and science. I especially like the history of science and science in history: be it the lives of scientists & natural philosophers; or, the applied science of Imperial Roman Army engineers or naval architects both now and in ages past. I am a father and grandfather twice over. One of my sons worked on the modernisation of the Parkes Radio Telescope for the 'Galileo' mission (the telescope that starred in the movie "The Dish"). I live less than one hour's drive from the Tidbinbilla Deep Space Tracking facility. Science and history feature a lot in the lives of my family as well as myself.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am housebound by illness but the Internet allows me to travel the world. Through joining SETI, I feel I can still contribute to science though I left teaching decades ago. I am convinced it is only a matter of time before SETI finds proof of other beings on other worlds in our galaxy. I believe this discovery will help the people of the world to come together in peace to explore what will be one of the greatest discoveries in all of our history.

I must say, however, that - so far - BOINC appears to be a backward step in encouraging ordinary people to join SETI. The BOINC interface is very off-putting compared to the endlessly fascinating SETI classic screensaver at work.
