Personal background |
I'm a 30-something computer software manager, and I participate in SETI at home for two reasons. First, I have a computer at work that would otherwise just be sitting idle waiting for the overnight run of our antivirus software (by decree of the IT department). Second, and more importantly, the receipt of a signal from an alien intelligence would be one of the most profoundly life-changing things that could happen.
I am firmly of the opinion that life is common in the universe; after all, it took hold here almost as soon as the Earth had a solid surface. However, for most of our history, life on Earth was just various kinds of unicellular slime. I think therefore that multicellular life will be rare, and intelligent life much rarer still. Intelligent life like us, who use radio for communication, will be even rarer than that.
But, even if the odds are stacked against detection, the potential rewards are so high that we must at least search for signals. After all, what if they called and no-one was listening? |
