Personal background
I am a Software Designer/Architect for a company called Epic Data International (www.epicdata.com). I spend a lot of time prototyping technology and poking at stuff to see how it works. The work I do these days is in java, a language I enjoy a great deal. My first computer was an HP desktop with a single line LED display, a thermal printer and a punch-card reader for input. I upgraded to a TRS-80 and finally hit the big time with a PDP 11/40 (running RSTS/E). Does anyone remember how to program the bootstrap on the PDP?
I live in Langley, BC Canada, have 2 kids (ages 5 and 3), so most of my off-work time is spent using up their abundant energy reserves. My hobbies include rollerblading, soccer, swimming and looking for idle computers on which to install SETI@home.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I don't actually believe that there are extraterrestrial beings out there, although I am open to having them for dinner if they do indeed exist. I download and run the screen-saver because it is a pretty cool concept in distributed computing. I think that a launched beacon is unnecessary as we launch notifications of our existance constantly through our transmissions and through deep-space probes.
