Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As a little girl in Texas I once went on an afternoon ride with my grandmother. On our way home, we both spotted this thing in the sky...we tried and tried to figure out what it was. It just sat there in the wide-open blue Texas sky...metallic, sort of dull it seemed, but a shiny spot towards the top. We passed on and I still watched it through the rear window, until it was out of my line of vision. To this day I have no idea what it was, but it has always stayed with me and as a result, all my life I have craned my neck to search out the night sky for....something. Is there life out there? I think that we-as-a-human-race are not quite READY for the absolute proven truth that other life exists...the futureshock would be too great on the majority. It would rattle the core of all that man has known. But I am all for sending out signals in search of answering calls. Maybe when we finally do get it, we will know how to respond. Yes, I believe there is life out there beyond our own. I think we would be foolish to think there wasn't. I am thrilled to be able to participate in this wonderful, brilliant project. "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". Each one of us that joins in the process becomes another step in the journey of searching.
