Personal background
I am originally from southeastern Illinois, but have lived in several states and currently live in Lima, Ohio.
I am 55 years old and now disabled after many years driving trucks over the road(long haul). No accidents in 21 years until the one that disabled me!! Thats the way it goes sometimes.
My time is spent playing games on my computer, and surfing the web. My computer is my window on the world. I use it to stay informed and to contact many family members both in the USA and around the world. I also do volunteer work for the elderly daycare center on the first floor of my apartment building. I play music on my keyboard for them three or four times a month. I enjoy it and so do they. All-in all life is good dispite recent happenings.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I strongly feel that somewhere among the billions of galaxies there is intelligent life of some sort or other. Like some I think it will be a long time before we probably here from anyone(or thing). But even though the task is daunting, and the area to cover huge, that should not keep us from looking.
The idea of looking for intelligent life some where in the universe is scary to a lot of people because of the uncertainty of what or who we might find out there. Will they be friendly? or will they be hostile? who knows. I hope that if we do make contact they will be friendly and beneficial toward us.
The idea of using a beacon would have many drawbacks suchas; What part of the universe do we aim it toward? What bandwidth do we use? Do we use a broad or narrow beam? How powerful should the signal be? Do we do something like Voyager and send a litte bit of everything?. I still think it would be a good idea no matter what is sent.
I run Seti@home because it makes me a small part of a huge effort. Think about it! Three plus million computers working on the same project!!!! Only in America. Keep up the good work and good luck to the one who hits the jackpot!!
