From our world, life exists in the open universe just as from the beach, life exists in the open ocean. Other than riding about on this strange planet of ours, ordinary joes have little opportunity of touching the cosmic... SETI@home allows that, to some degree. I've had it running now for a couple of years and it still gives me some strange kind of satisfaction.
